Governor Otu made the announcement following a productive closed-door meeting with labor leaders, revealing the new wage along with consequential adjustments. He stated that the welfare of workers remains a top priority for his government.

“After a constructive meeting with labor leaders today, I am pleased to announce the approval of ₦70,000 as the new minimum wage for our hardworking state workers, along with necessary adjustments. The welfare of our workers is a core focus of this administration. Together, we will continue to build a better Cross River State,” Otu shared on his X handle.

This move comes after the governor initially proposed a ₦40,000 minimum wage in May during the Workers’ Day celebration, which was met with criticism from residents. In response to calls for further discussions, Governor Otu approved the establishment of a Joint Public Service Negotiating and Implementation Committee in November to address the ₦70,000 national minimum wage.

The committee, which began its work on November 1, was chaired by the state’s Head of Service, Dr. Innocent Eteng. Other members included Mr. Gregory Olayi, state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Mr. Monday Ogbodun, state Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The committee was tasked with finalizing recommendations to ensure the timely implementation of the new wage structure in compliance with state policies.
