I Was Stripped Like A Criminal” – Obaseki’s Cousin Breaks Silence After Brutal Public Humiliation
A cousin of former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki, Don Pedro Obaseki, has recounted a harrowing experience in which he was allegedly stripped naked by suspected political thugs.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a video aired by Africa Independent Television on Sunday, Obaseki said the incident happened around 11:30 a.m. while he was playing football with members of the Uwa All Stars at Uwa Primary School in Benin City.
He alleged that the assailants, some of whom were armed, forcefully seized him and paraded him through several streets, claiming they were acting on the directive of the Oba of Benin’s Palace.
According to him, the attackers refused to identify themselves despite his pleas, beat him repeatedly and dragged him from Igbisawan Street through Akpapava and on to Ring Road, a major artery in the city. He said he was publicly stripped naked before being taken into the Oba’s palace, where he was allegedly ordered to kneel in full public view.
Obaseki described the ordeal as deeply humiliating, saying he had never experienced such degradation in his life, particularly as a native of Benin who takes pride in his heritage.
He further revealed that he was later taken to a police station along Oba Market Road, where the Commissioner of Police intervened and ordered his release.
Obaseki said the incident left him traumatised and that he was told his alleged offence stemmed from a public remark he made in London, where he said, “May Edo people live long and prosper,” instead of invoking the Oba of Benin.
He expressed shock at the explanation, noting that his words were interpreted as a grave violation in Benin, despite his decades-long efforts to promote and elevate Benin culture through his work in the creative industry.
