Okinbaloye, during a Thursday episode of Politics Today on Channels Television, had suggested that the 2027 elections were beginning to look less competitive due to the crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He warned that if the party—seen by some as a key opposition platform—fails to participate effectively, it could pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

He expressed concern that elections lose their value when there is little or no competition, noting that the absence of strong opposition could weaken the democratic process.

Responding during a media chat in Abuja on Friday, Wike criticised the journalist’s comments, accusing him of taking sides in the political situation. He said he was taken aback while watching the programme and felt the anchor had crossed the line from asking questions to expressing personal opinions.

Wike argued that as an interviewer, Okinbaloye should remain neutral and avoid making statements that suggest bias. According to him, while it is appropriate to question guests, it is not the role of a presenter to project personal views on national television, especially on sensitive political matters.
