The professionals, under the umbrella of the Nigerian Diaspora Professionals for Democratic Stability (NDPDS), made their stance known in an electronic statement released on Monday.

According to the group, the renewed impeachment efforts by the Rivers State House of Assembly stem from a long-running political feud between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

In the statement jointly signed by NDPDS President, Dr Chukwudi Nnamani, and Secretary, Mr Adewale Ogunsiwaju, the impeachment process was described as a misuse of legislative authority.

“The recurring threats of impeachment against Governor Fubara are predictable and driven by political interests. This is no longer about constitutional oversight but about control of Rivers State’s political machinery and resources,” the group stated.

The diaspora professionals observed that the political tension in Rivers State began shortly after Fubara assumed office, following the collapse of his relationship with Wike.

They noted that the House of Assembly has become sharply divided, with legislative actions increasingly influenced by loyalty to external political forces rather than the will of the electorate.

The group warned that no democracy should tolerate persistent efforts to remove an elected governor simply for resisting political godfatherism.

NDPDS cautioned that repeated impeachment attempts could weaken governance, discourage investment and worsen institutional instability in a state vital to Nigeria’s economic wellbeing.

“Rivers State must not be reduced to a battleground for elite power struggles. As a key economic hub, its governance cannot be sacrificed on the altar of political rivalry,” the statement said.

Defending the governor’s actions, the group argued that political disagreements or policy differences do not amount to gross misconduct under the constitution.

“Disagreement is not a crime, and independence is not misconduct. A governor exercising constitutional authority should not be portrayed as insubordinate,” the statement added.

The group stressed that impeachment was intended as an exceptional constitutional measure and not a routine political weapon.

It said it was closely monitoring developments in the state, warning that repeated impeachment plots undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“When impeachment becomes commonplace rather than exceptional, democracy suffers,” the group said, calling on political leaders to prioritise dialogue and constitutional restraint.

“The will of the people must prevail. Rivers State deserves effective governance, not endless political conflict,” the statement concluded.
