He said the visit was a positive and strategic engagement, noting that it is normal for politicians eyeing the same position to hold discussions. According to him, Obi’s visit to Amaechi was done in good faith and was not about negotiating withdrawal from the race.

Umeh emphasised that consultations are necessary, as not all aspirants can emerge as candidates or eventually become president at the same time.

He noted that such engagements help create room for dialogue and informed decision-making among contenders.

The lawmaker also warned that rigid personal ambitions could weaken the opposition’s chances, stressing the need for compromise and collective interest.

He pointed out that with timelines already set for party primaries, aspirants should begin to show flexibility and a sense of patriotism if the party hopes to remain competitive.

According to him, failure to do so could harm the party’s chances, as internal rivalries may ultimately undermine its performance in the election.

Umeh acknowledged the political experience of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar but suggested that seasoned politicians should begin to support the emergence of younger leaders with fresh ideas that align with the expectations of Nigerians.

He maintained that any agreement among opposition figures must prioritise the needs of citizens rather than individual ambitions, stressing that voters’ expectations should guide political decisions.

On concerns about internal divisions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Umeh downplayed the situation, arguing that those described as factional leaders are not presidential contenders and therefore do not reflect the party’s main political direction.

He further stated that the ADC remains the most suitable platform for the opposition, warning that shifting to another party without strong structures could create more complications rather than resolve existing issues.

Addressing the ongoing legal dispute within the party, Umeh expressed confidence that the courts would clarify the matter, noting that once it is determined that such issues fall outside judicial jurisdiction, the crisis would be resolved.

He concluded by stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting democratic principles, urging Nigerians to approach the 2027 elections with responsibility and commitment to due process.
