Kebbi Workers Left In Lurch As PDP Accuses State Government Of Breaking ₦75,000 Wage Commitment
Kebbi Workers Left In Lurch As PDP Accuses State Government Of Breaking ₦75,000 Wage CommitmentThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State has criticized the state government for allegedly underpaying local government workers following the release of November salaries under the newly implemented minimum wage structure. The party’s spokesperson, Alhaji Sani Dododo, made the claim in a statement issued on Friday in Birnin Kebbi.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Dododo stated that the PDP has been closely monitoring the implementation of the ₦75,000 minimum wage announced in October 2024 by Governor Nasir Idris. The governor had promised that the new minimum wage would be paid to both state and local government workers starting from October.
However, Dododo alleged that, despite the governor’s pledge, workers at the local government level and teachers in the 21 local government areas of Kebbi State received salaries far below the agreed ₦75,000 minimum. He expressed disappointment, noting that after delays, the wages were released, but they were “grossly” less than the promised amount.
“This was confirmed by several teachers and local government workers across the 21 LGAs of the state,” Dododo stated. He further questioned why the state and local government workers were being paid different rates despite the governor’s public commitment. “We challenge the state government to dispute the fact that despite the agreed minimum wage figure, the state is still paying less than ₦40,000 to almost all categories of staff on Grade Levels 3, 4, and 5,” he added.
Dododo called on the state government to honor its promise and pay workers their rightful dues, stressing the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of society.
NULGE Responds, Urges Workers to File Complaints
In response, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Alhaji Faruk Abubakar-Sadiq, acknowledged the concerns raised by workers. He urged employees who felt they were underpaid or omitted from the payment list to formally report their grievances.
“Any staff with complaints regarding omission or underpayment should lodge their complaints with the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs through their respective Directors of Finance and Supply. These complaints will be forwarded to the ministry for necessary action,” Abubakar-Sadiq assured.
While he recognized the issues, Abubakar-Sadiq praised Governor Nasir Idris for approving and implementing the new minimum wage, calling it a sign of the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers. He assured local government employees, including teachers and medical workers, that their concerns would be addressed and that the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs had committed to resolving valid complaints.
The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria have also voiced their support for greater transparency and fairness in the payment process.
