Kwankwaso Sets Tough New Conditions Before Possible Switch From NNPP To APC

Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has stated that any move to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) would only be considered if firm guarantees are provided regarding the future of the Kano State government and the protection of his supporters’ interests.

Kwankwaso made the remarks on Wednesday at his Miller Road residence in Kano while addressing leaders and supporters from Rano and Dawakin Tofa Local Government Areas, alongside members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement who reiterated their loyalty to him and the NNPP.

“I never said I would not join the APC, but before any such decision is taken, there must be clear assurances about the future of the Kano State government,” he said.

He also questioned the fate of his political base, asking what would become of NNPP lawmakers and other loyalists if a defection were to occur.

Reflecting on previous political alliances, Kwankwaso recalled how his camp had played a major role in forming governments in the past, only to be sidelined afterward.

“Previously, we joined a party, helped to build the government, and were later abandoned. That experience is the reason we eventually left,” he noted.

He further asked whether attitudes toward his movement had truly changed, stressing that the contributions of the Kwankwasiyya group were well known.

According to him, there have so far been no concrete commitments to safeguard his political structure or ensure continuity of governance in Kano State.

“Up to this moment, no one has given me a definite assurance that we will retain our government or preserve our political structure. I need clarity on where we stand,” Kwankwaso said.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, Commissioner for Science and Technology Yusuf Kofar Mata, Kano NNPP Chairman Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, and other senior party figures.
