This action follows recent events, including the demolition in Mende two weeks ago, during which affected residents claimed they were only given a two-hour notice before their properties were demolished. The state government has faced criticism for not providing adequate notice to affected residents prior to demolition.
In an effort to dispel such criticisms and ensure transparency, the Commissioner posted the notice, stating, “The Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has issued a 48-hour contravention notice to owners of properties built on the Right-Of-Way of drainage channels in Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa, Isolo. This action is in line with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, and reflects the renewed commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to facilitate the unimpeded flow of rainwater and prevent flooding across the State.”
