Opatola Victor, who took legal action against the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Debt Management Office, the Ministry of Finance, and other bodies, insists that the debt was never cleared but merely securitized. He explains that securitization is a process where the federal government’s debt is converted into public debt, which the Nigerian people are now responsible for paying.

“The debt that was supposed to be repaid by the Federal Government, a debt that was neither approved nor monitored by the National Assembly, has now been shifted onto the backs of Nigerians,” Opatola stated. He added that the ₦30 trillion mentioned by President Tinubu in his speech was never paid off but was instead disguised through technical language to mislead the public into believing it had been resolved.
The lawyer expressed his concern over the government’s approach, noting that this debt was accumulated without proper oversight from the National Assembly or input from the Nigerian people. “A debt that Nigerians had no control over has now been converted into a public liability that we all must bear,” he said.
Opatola also criticized the government for what he termed a desperate attempt to appear competent and efficient. He urged the administration to stop misleading its citizens with false claims, asserting that transparency is essential for trust and governance.
“The Federal Government must cease and desist from making barefaced lies to its citizens. It must stop,” Opatola concluded.
