Speaking on Saturday at the annual agricultural fair in Paris, Macron responded to reporters’ questions about the Court’s ruling the previous day, which found Trump’s tariffs unlawful. “It is not a bad thing to have a Supreme Court, and therefore the rule of law,” Macron said. “In democracies, it is healthy to have power balanced by countervailing forces.”

Macron added that France would assess the impact of Trump’s newly announced 10 percent global tariff and respond as necessary. He emphasized France’s intention to keep exporting key products such as agricultural goods, luxury items, fashion, and aerospace equipment.

Trump introduced the new 10 percent tariffs on all countries on Friday, just hours after the Supreme Court invalidated his earlier tariff measures.

Macron also urged a measured and calm approach to trade tensions, while noting that countries affected by what they see as unfair tariffs are unlikely to remain silent. He stressed that trade should be governed by “reciprocity,” rather than unilateral decisions imposed by one side.
