Tomorrow, when plenary resumes, the Senate and House of Representatives’ joint Committees on Appropriation are expected to present their reports on the budget.
It should be noted that the National Assembly had postponed the resumption of plenary to give Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) more time to complete their budget defense.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, suggested that the budget is likely to be passed once lawmakers reconvene on Tuesday and complete the necessary legislative processes.
He confirmed that the committees on Appropriation would present their reports once plenary begins tomorrow.
“We’re reconvening on the 4th, which is Tuesday, and we’ll be expecting the reports. The issues raised by these reports will influence the timeline for passing the budget,” he explained.
Adaramodu noted that, after the report is presented, the Senate will review the 2025 budget thoroughly, considering it line by line and clause by clause, before seeking agreement from the House of Representatives.
“It won’t be a quiet process. We’ll lay the report, ask questions from the Appropriation and Finance Committees, then seek concurrence from the House before sending it to the presidency for assent,” he said.
When asked if the budget would be passed this week, Adaramodu responded, “We may likely pass it, but it depends on several factors, such as the report from the Appropriations Committee and the extensive debate on the budget thereafter. We want to ensure thoroughness to avoid any back-and-forth on supplementary budgets later.”
Regarding a possible increase in the budget, Adaramodu stated that requests from Ministries and Agencies will be evaluated based on the available revenue, acknowledging that even with a budget as high as ₦100 trillion, agencies may still seek more. However, he emphasized that the budget will be scrutinized to match the government’s expected revenue.
