Nigeria Customs Generates ₦144.2 Billion Revenue In Ten Months, Surpasses ExpectationsThe Murtala Mohammed Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) announced on Thursday that it had generated ₦144.2 billion in revenue for the federal government from January to October 2024. This marks a significant increase from the ₦74.4 billion collected during the same period in 2023, surpassing last year’s figure by ₦69.92 billion.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Comptroller Michael Toyin Awe, the Customs Area Controller for the Murtala Mohammed Area Command, shared the revenue achievement while addressing the media. He attributed the success to improved trade facilitation, stronger compliance from stakeholders, and more effective law enforcement strategies.

In addition to the impressive revenue collection, the command also made notable seizures, including 250 turtles, 23 walkie-talkies, 175 military helmets, and 50 drones, all suspected to be part of smuggling operations orchestrated by criminal elements. The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of these seized items amounted to ₦3.322 billion between July and October 2024.

Awe detailed that the military equipment, which included the walkie-talkies, helmets, and drones, were imported from Turkey by a criminal syndicate. Acting on intelligence, a suspect linked to the importation was arrested in Turkey, at the request of the Comptroller General of Customs, Wale Adeniyi. The arrested individual has been formally charged in court, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend further members of the syndicate.

“These items do not have an end-user certificate, which contravenes the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023,” Awe explained. He also highlighted that illicit drugs were among the seized contraband.

The Murtala Mohammed Area Command has implemented measures such as streamlined cargo clearance, increased inspections, and improved intelligence gathering, all aimed at combating smuggling and promoting legitimate trade. These efforts are expected to further bolster revenue collection and curb the inflow of illegal goods into the country.
