In the program “One-On-One with Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” the governor explained that the wage was determined based on affordability and capacity, stating, “We actually increased our salary earlier in the year… I hope to increase the minimum wage to ₦100,000 in January, not to undermine others, but to ensure a living wage for our people.”

In an interview, Agnes expressed cautious support for the proposal but laid out conditions for acceptance. She noted that since the state is not offering anything below the minimum, the union feels compelled to accept the wage, particularly given the governor’s acknowledgment of competing interests due to the growing population and the need for improved infrastructure.

“We agree to the ₦85,000 for now, but this is contingent on the governor’s commitment to providing necessary infrastructure, such as rail services,” she explained. “If any state announces a wage higher than ₦85,000, we will reject that amount outright.”

Agnes emphasized that the NLC is engaged in ongoing discussions with the government regarding various issues, including affordable housing for workers. She reiterated the union’s stance: “We want to communicate that if another state declares more than ₦85,000, we will reject it completely.
