Baba-Ahmed made the comments on Tuesday during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television.

He said both political heavyweights owe the nation a duty to step aside and allow Nigerians choose from a wider pool of emerging leaders, noting that such a move would open up the political space and strengthen democratic choice.

According to Baba-Ahmed, President Tinubu may not have the capacity to continue governing beyond 2027, when he would have completed a full four-year term. He suggested that the country would benefit more from a younger, healthier leader with sharper focus on governance.

He said Tinubu should consider using the end of his first term as an opportunity to hand over leadership to someone better positioned to drive the nation forward.

Baba-Ahmed expressed a similar position on Atiku Abubakar, insisting that the former vice president also has a responsibility to refrain from contesting again.

“I have said before that if it were up to me, there are two people who should not run in 2027 at all — President Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar,” he said.

“President Tinubu has achieved his lifelong ambition by becoming president. By 2027, he would have completed his term, and I believe that would be the right time for him to say the country needs a younger, healthier leader who is more committed to governance.

“The same applies to Atiku. Both men owe Nigeria the responsibility of stepping aside. The country needs fresh blood and a new lease of life.”
