In a statement released on Monday, Ohanaeze described Obasanjo’s demand as “ill-advised” and “politically motivated,” asserting that it lacked both merit and ethical justification. The group highlighted Obasanjo’s own controversial legacy in managing Nigeria’s electoral processes, particularly the 2003 and 2007 elections, which were widely criticized as among the most flawed in the country’s history.
Ohanaeze further stressed that Yakubu’s tenure, which is set to conclude in 2025, should not be prematurely ended. Instead, the group called for the completion of ongoing electoral reforms before any discussions about the future of INEC leadership.
The organization commended INEC’s progress under Yakubu’s leadership, particularly the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV), which it believes have significantly improved transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to advancing electoral reforms that would fortify Nigeria’s democracy. He said, “It is premature and ill-timed for anyone to call for the dismissal of Professor Mahmood Yakubu while he is still in office, especially with his tenure set to end in 2025. We advocate for stability and the completion of ongoing reforms, with discussions on the future of INEC leadership taking place only after Yakubu’s term has concluded.
