Despite a string of missed chances in regulation time, Nigeria’s persistence paid off, with Osimhen turning hero in extra time by netting two crucial goals that sealed the emphatic win.
The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when Akor Adams broke the deadlock with a sharp finish inside the box. Gabon, however, refused to fold and drew level in the 89th minute through Mario Lemina, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to push the game into extra time.
Spurred by the setback, Nigeria regained control in the 97th minute as substitute Chidera Ejuke calmly slotted home to restore the lead — setting the stage for Osimhen’s brilliance.
The Galatasaray forward fired home Nigeria’s third goal in the 102nd minute after a sweeping team move, before adding a spectacular solo effort eight minutes later to seal the dominant 4–1 victory.
With the win, the Super Eagles advance to Sunday’s playoff final, where they will face either Cameroon or DR Congo for a spot in the intercontinental playoff scheduled for March 2026 — a crucial step toward realizing their World Cup dream.
