A widely circulated article by People’s Gazette has exposed Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff, who is now under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in facilitating oil bunkering and participating in multibillion-naira contract-splitting fraud within seven months of his tenure. Documents and federal sources suggest that Mr. Ogalla’s actions have raised concerns, prompting Defense Minister Bello Matawalle to take notice.
The Gazette’s investigation revealed instances where Mr. Ogalla released oil tankers caught transporting stolen crude after receiving kickbacks in millions of American dollars. Despite internal calls to remove his subordinates involved in the scheme, Mr. Ogalla reportedly resisted, highlighting the depth of the corrupt practices affecting Nigeria’s oil security and administration.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Mr. Ogalla in June 2023 to replace Awwal Zubairu Gambo, who faced similar accusations during his tenure from 2021 to 2023. Efforts to inform President Tinubu about the situation have reportedly reached an advanced stage within the defense ministry.
The response of the president and the course of action to address the crisis remain uncertain, with a spokesperson declining comments. This development follows the recent suspension of a minister from office after the president discovered irregularities in her use of public funds.
Despite the uncertainty, Deji Adeyanju, through his Twitter handle, declared, “We will be on this matter till the Chief of Naval Staff is removed from office.” As the allegations against Emmanuel Ogalla continue to unfold, Nigerians are keenly watching for further developments and potential actions by the president to address the pressing issues.
