Political Drama: Wike Reveals How Alleged Loyalty Scuttled Senator’s Top Role

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has shared how his association with former Senator for Cross River Central, Sandy Onor, allegedly cost the ex-lawmaker significant political opportunities.

Wike spoke over the weekend in Abuja at Onor’s 60th birthday celebration, expressing regret that the former senator faced setbacks for maintaining close ties with him.

According to the minister, Onor was denied key appointments because of Wike’s open support for his governorship ambition. He recalled that during discussions around appointments to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), a nominee was allegedly blocked due to his backing of Onor. Wike said he advised Onor at the time not to be discouraged, noting that events would ultimately unfold as destined.

Wike further revealed that when President Bola Tinubu created the South South Development Commission (SSDC), he proposed that the chairmanship—initially meant for Rivers State—be ceded to Cross River State in favour of Onor.

However, he said opposition emerged from the state, with calls for Onor’s removal from consideration. Wike stated that he responded by insisting that if Onor was to be dropped, the position should revert to Rivers State instead.
