Shekarau announced the move on Sunday at his residence on Mundubawa Avenue in Kano, where the venue was decorated with APC posters.
He explained that his decision came after wide consultations and a thorough assessment of available political options.
Addressing supporters, he said the choice was a collective one, inviting anyone with opposing views to speak up.
The former governor made the switch alongside Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo, another PDP chieftain. His defection came just hours after he formally resigned from the PDP.
In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to his ward chairman in Giginyu, Nassarawa Local Government Area, Shekarau confirmed his departure from the party with immediate effect.
He also expressed appreciation to party leaders at the grassroots level, thanking them for their support and leadership.
Copies of the resignation letter were forwarded to PDP officials at both the local government and state levels.
His exit follows months of internal crisis within the PDP, which have led to a wave of defections and political realignments.
Earlier in April, Shekarau had hinted at leaving the party during a visit by APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, describing the PDP as troubled and ineffective.
He had also held meetings with President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, fueling speculation about his next political move.
Shekarau, who served as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 under the All Nigeria Peoples Party, has a history of switching political alliances.
He was among the founding members of the APC, later defected, returned in 2018, moved back to the PDP, and has now rejoined the APC once again.
