The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has stated that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, does not need the approval of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso to either remain in the party or defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The party made this position known in a statement released on Monday amid growing speculation and tension surrounding the governor’s political future and alleged plans to leave the NNPP.

Speaking on the matter, the NNPP National Secretary, Ogini Olaposi, said Governor Yusuf, as the party’s only sitting governor and its leader, has the freedom to determine his political path without external influence.

According to Olaposi, while the party would prefer that the governor stays, it recognises his constitutional right to align with any political party of his choice, especially in light of the legal challenges he currently faces.

“We may advise the governor to remain in the NNPP, but we also understand that no one can deny him the right to join any party he chooses. If he has decided to leave, no form of pressure, intimidation or blackmail can stop him,” Olaposi said.

He also stressed that the NNPP harbours no hostility toward any political party, including the ruling APC.

The statement comes in response to comments made on Sunday by Ladipo Johnson, spokesperson to Senator Kwankwaso, who dismissed as false reports claiming that Kwankwaso had endorsed Governor Yusuf’s defection. Johnson alleged that those promoting the defection within the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement were responsible for spreading the misinformation.

However, the NNPP urged Kwankwaso to stay out of the governor’s personal political decisions and allow him to focus on governance.

Olaposi questioned Kwankwaso’s opposition to the alleged defection, asking whether it was driven by godfatherism or personal grievances against the APC, adding that such issues should not be imposed on others.

“Any personal disagreement Kwankwaso has with the APC should remain his own and not be forced on individuals who choose to associate with the party,” Olaposi said.

Reacting to claims that Kwankwaso described the planned move as a betrayal, the NNPP described the remark as ironic, recalling that the former minister once attempted to take over the party’s structure after benefiting from it during the 2023 elections.

The party concluded by reaffirming its support for Governor Yusuf regardless of his final decision, while still appealing to him to reconsider and remain within the NNPP.

“We stand firmly with the Kano State governor and will support whatever decision he makes, even as we continue to encourage him to have a rethink and stay with the NNPP,” the statement added.
