Political Tension Rises As Wike Speaks On PDP’s 2027 Presidential Candidate Plans

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has affirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will participate in the 2027 general elections, despite concerns about the party’s future.

Speaking during a media session on Friday, Wike dismissed suggestions that the PDP might lose relevance before the next election, stressing that the party will be on the ballot and remains capable of making an impact in parts of the country.

He noted that although the PDP has not produced a president since 2015, it has continued to function across various levels of government and remains politically active.

According to Wike, the priority should be strengthening the party’s structure and influence rather than focusing solely on winning the presidency. He urged members to concentrate on building the party’s presence at the state and grassroots levels.

He explained that political success is not limited to securing the presidency, as control at lower levels of government is equally important for maintaining relevance and influence.

The former Rivers State governor also cautioned against hastily selecting a presidential candidate without adequate preparation. He emphasised that elections require careful planning, as well as mental and emotional readiness.

Wike added that winning the presidency without strong support at other levels of governance could weaken the party’s overall position and reduce its long-term effectiveness.

He further stressed the importance of grassroots mobilisation, noting that parties must build a solid foundation to remain competitive.

The PDP has been grappling with internal divisions since 2025, with rival factions holding separate meetings and pursuing legal actions over leadership. These challenges have raised concerns about the party’s unity as the 2027 elections approach.
