Power Struggle Intensifies: Bala Mohammed Caught Between APC And ADC Amid Defection Uncertainty

The much-anticipated defection of Bala Mohammed from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to either the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not materialize on Thursday, despite widespread speculation about his political future.

The development comes amid intense lobbying from both parties, as they seek to secure the governor’s support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although Mohammed is nearing the end of his second term in office next year, sources say he has been actively courted by the ruling APC as well as the ADC, which is currently facing internal leadership challenges.

On Wednesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition of the ADC National Working Committee led by former Senate President David Mark, citing compliance with a Court of Appeal judgment.

It remains uncertain whether this development influenced Mohammed’s decision to pause a potential move to the ADC or if he is still considering joining the APC instead.

In recent days, the governor reportedly held separate meetings with APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and ADC figure Babachir Lawal, who visited him on consecutive days. These meetings are believed to be part of ongoing efforts by both parties to win him over.

Despite expectations that he would announce his next political move on Thursday, no event was scheduled in Bauchi for such an announcement.

A source familiar with the situation revealed that the governor was not even in the state at the time.

“The governor is not in Bauchi at the moment,” the source said.

The source added that Mohammed had reportedly traveled out of the state to continue consultations with political allies and key stakeholders, though his exact location was not disclosed.
