Presidency Speaks: Why Wale Edun Was Absent As Cardoso Represents Nigeria At Global Financial Summit

The confirmation came from the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that Edun would not be leading Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings scheduled to begin on Monday, October 13, in Washington, D.C.
According to Onanuga, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, will now head the Nigerian delegation in Edun’s stead. The team will also include the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anete.
“Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, Governor of the Central Bank, will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., opening Monday, October 13. Cardoso, as the alternate Governor, will stand in for the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who is currently indisposed. The Nigerian delegation also includes the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anete,” the statement read.
The Presidency further highlighted that, according to the World Bank, the key sessions at the meetings will include the Development Committee Plenary on October 16 and the International Monetary and Financial Committee sessions on October 17. Other activities will feature regional briefings, press conferences, and discussions focused on international development, the global economy, and financial markets.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged suggesting that Wale Edun has been battling undisclosed health issues for several weeks and may soon be flown abroad for advanced medical treatment.
