Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Gambari explained that although Buhari achieved some success in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency, ongoing violence in other parts of the country continued to trouble him.

He noted that despite the former president’s efforts, banditry and attacks across the North-West and parts of the North-Central remained unresolved.

According to Gambari, one of Buhari’s greatest regrets was that he could not do more to improve the nation’s security situation before the end of his administration. He added that Buhari took pride in ensuring that no part of Nigeria remained under Boko Haram control.

Gambari recalled that Buhari was particularly pained by the persistent insecurity in the North-West and North-Central regions, especially the rise of banditry. He said the former president often felt he had done all he could, even questioning whether the country’s foundation was strong enough to fully address the challenges.

Gambari also responded to questions about alleged coup rumours said to have surfaced toward the end of Buhari’s tenure, following claims by the Minister of Defence that such threats existed before President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration.

He stated that he had no knowledge of any such intelligence being passed to Buhari through his office, adding that the president had multiple channels of information and may have received reports that were not shared with him.
