Sh*ck Confession: 9ice Reveals Why He Hid His Babalawo Spiritual Practice

He made the disclosure on Wednesday night during the listening party of his new album Beginning of Wisdom, held in Yaba, Lagos.

The 46-year-old singer explained that his journey into Ifa tradition is not recent, noting that he has been involved in the practice for over 18 years.

According to him, he chose to keep it secret for years out of concern that people might distance themselves from him if they knew about it.

Despite the secrecy, he said he has remained committed to the spiritual path and its teachings.

The “Gongo Aso” crooner added that his engagement with the tradition goes beyond belief, as he has learned its rituals, chants, and methods of consulting the oracle.

He also said that his understanding of the practice has helped him stay connected to his cultural roots while relating with people across different generations.

9ice, who runs Alapomeji Entertainment Limited and founded Alapomeji Ancestral Record, explained that part of the tradition includes observing important periods such as Odun Ifa.

He described it as a spiritual season for reflection, gratitude, and seeking guidance for the future.

He said: “I’ve been a Babalawo for more than 18 years, but I kept it hidden because some people would run away from me if they knew. During Odun Ifa, we give thanks for the past and pray for guidance for the future—asking for direction on what to do and what to avoid.”

He added that his latest music project draws inspiration from his spiritual beliefs and personal journey, which he says reflect his understanding of life and destiny.
