Sh*ck Twist In Athletics: Favour Ofili’s Turkey Switch Blocked, Nigeria Seeks Return

The decision, announced on Thursday by the World Athletics Nationality Review Panel, turned down the application submitted by the Türkiye Athletics Federation. The panel cited concerns about the integrity of international athletics and what it described as coordinated recruitment efforts involving multiple countries.

Reacting on Friday, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the athlete, describing her as a valued national talent and urging her to return to compete for the country.

He said Ofili remains deeply valued and stressed that the nation is ready to provide her with full support to help her excel at the highest level of competition.

Olopade also encouraged the sprinter not to be discouraged by the setback, noting that major competitions such as the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles still lie ahead.

World Athletics disclosed that a total of 11 similar transfer requests connected to the same recruitment pattern were rejected, warning that such practices could undermine the credibility of national representation in the sport.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that Turkey may challenge the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, a move that could set an important precedent in athlete nationality transfer cases.

In Nigeria, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria has welcomed the decision. Its president, Tonobok Okowa, called for unity and continued support for Ofili, emphasising stability and encouragement for the athlete.

Despite the controversy, Ofili remains eligible to compete for Nigeria in upcoming major events, including the World Championships and the Olympic Games.
