NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, revealed that the seized fake medications, worth ₦100 billion, were confiscated from pharmaceutical dealers in Lagos’ Idumota market.

She emphasized that the destruction was necessary to prevent expired, fake, substandard, and falsified drugs from re-entering the market.

Speaking at the incineration event, Adeyeye reaffirmed NAFDAC’s role as the lead agency and chair of the Federal Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs, ensuring the safety, quality, and efficacy of pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages.

She further highlighted NAFDAC’s strict regulatory measures for licensing, sales, and distribution of drug products, reinforcing its commitment to providing high-quality medicines.

Represented at the event by Yedunni Adenuga, NAFDAC’s Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Adeyeye described the alarming discoveries made during recent enforcement operations in Idumota, Onitsha, Ariaria, and Ezeuku open drug markets.

“The presence of unregistered products, banned substances like Analgin, and controlled drugs such as Tramadol 225mg significantly contribute to security threats in our country,” she stated.

She credited the success of the operation to the National Security Adviser (NSA), who approved the deployment of over 1,000 security personnel, including the military, police, and DSS.

“Today, we are witnessing the destruction of expired, falsified, controlled, unregistered, and banned medicines seized from Idumota Open Drug outlets,” she added.

The counterfeit products destroyed had an estimated street value of ₦100 billion. Several suspects were apprehended during the three-week operation, with investigations ongoing and legal action pending for those found guilty.

Adeyeye reiterated NAFDAC’s commitment to maternal and child healthcare, noting that a significant quantity of improperly stored vaccines and other products were also confiscated during the crackdown.
