Sh*cking Weekly Market Update: How Much You’ll Pay For Rice, Beans, And Tomatoes

The prices of essential food items continue to surge across Nigerian markets, putting additional strain on households already facing economic challenges.

A recent survey of market rates shows that staple foods remain expensive, prompting many families to adjust their meals, reduce portion sizes, or opt for cheaper alternatives.

Cooking oils, a household necessity, remain steeply priced. A 5-litre container of palm oil now costs around ₦10,000, while groundnut oil is priced at about ₦3,200 per litre. Traders attribute the high costs to supply shortages, transportation expenses, and growing demand.

Rice, a staple for many, sells for approximately ₦52,250 per 50kg bag, a price considered unaffordable by many consumers. Swallow foods are also feeling the pinch, with medium-sized Poundo Yam meal going for ₦3,500, and the larger pack priced at ₦7,000.

Traditional soup ingredients are not spared. A modu of egusi now costs around ₦2,700, and a paint bucket of garri is priced at about ₦1,200, making everyday meal preparation more expensive.

Fresh produce prices remain volatile. A heap of tomatoes currently sells for roughly ₦3,500, while a heap of pepper goes for about ₦2,500. Market traders cite seasonal shortages and losses during transport as key factors driving up costs.

Processed foods have also seen notable increases. A roll pack of cornflakes is now ₦1,300, while spaghetti can cost as much as ₦18,600 per pack in certain markets.
