Tension In LP As Party Reacts To Peter Obi’s Planned Defection To ADC

A party source in Abuja told Punch that preparations for Obi’s exit are already underway, with his supporters and close allies reportedly mobilising ahead of the move. The source also claimed that Obi recently met with ADC National Chairman, David Mark, to reaffirm his commitment to the coalition, following pressure from the party to clarify his intentions about joining them. According to the source, these developments may have influenced Obi’s decision, with plans allegedly in place for a formal declaration rally in Enugu on December 31.

Reacting to the reports, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the party would not take an official position until Obi personally confirms any decision to leave. He maintained that defection is a common feature of Nigerian politics and insisted that the Labour Party would remain strong regardless of Obi’s actions.

Ifoh added that if Obi eventually leaves, it would be a matter of personal choice rather than a reflection of failure within the party. While noting that the party holds no grudges, he said it would have been preferable for the former Anambra State governor to stay and resolve any differences internally, acknowledging the platform the party provided him during the 2023 elections. Nonetheless, he wished Obi well should he choose to move on.
