Tension In National Assembly Over Jigawa Lawmaker’s Sh*cking ₦3m Motion Allegation
The House of Representatives has demanded that Ibrahim Auyo, the lawmaker representing Hadejia/Auyo/Kafin Hausa Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, provide evidence to support his claim that legislators pay to sponsor motions and bills in the green chamber.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Auyo, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had told his constituents during a meeting in Jigawa that lawmakers allegedly spend between ₦1 million and ₦3 million to present motions, bills, and petitions.
In videos circulating online, the lawmaker was seen defending himself against criticisms of being inactive in sponsoring motions and bills, insisting that such legislative actions carry a high financial cost. Speaking in Hausa, he claimed the payments were part of the process to get proposals approved and also dismissed accusations of failing to help constituents secure employment.
Reacting in a statement on Friday, House spokesperson Akin Rotimi said the lawmaker would be summoned to clarify his allegations when the House resumes. If he fails to provide proof, the matter will be referred to the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
“The House of Representatives is aware of a viral video in which Rep. Ibrahim Usman Auyo alleged that members receive payments to sponsor motions, bills, and petitions. These claims are unverified and, if left unchecked, could damage public trust in the National Assembly,” Rotimi said.
He stressed that the National Assembly operates with transparent and documented procedures for introducing legislative items, as outlined in the Constitution, House Standing Orders, and parliamentary ethics. The insinuation that sponsoring motions or bills is a ‘contract job’ involving bribes, he added, is inconsistent with these processes.
Rotimi assured that the House remains committed to preserving the dignity of parliament while fostering mutual respect among members.
