Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was expected to resume at the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt, on Thursday following his reinstatement, failed to show up — a development sources link to ongoing negotiations over sensitive appointments.

Thousands of supporters who had gathered at the Government House to welcome him were left disappointed when the governor did not appear.

Fubara was scheduled to resume duties after President Bola Tinubu lifted the six-month emergency rule imposed on the state on March 18.

Speaking to The Punch, one of Fubara’s aides, who asked not to be named, confirmed that the governor was in Abuja and would return to Port Harcourt on Friday to assume office.

“The governor is in Abuja. He will be coming to Port Harcourt to resume work on Friday. That is all I can say for now,” the aide stated.

However, multiple sources alleged that Wike is pressing for the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, and most of the commissioners to be drawn from his loyalists. They claimed the deadlock over this matter delayed Fubara’s return.

One source added: “We can’t say for now if any agreement has been reached.”

But reacting to the claims on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wike denied interfering in Fubara’s administration.

He said:
“I cannot go and impose anything on the governor. Why would I impose anything on the governor? Assuming I go to the governor and say, ‘I want this,’ will the state collapse? I will not. I have no candidate, and I will not.”
