Benin’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, confirmed that midfield dynamo Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche will miss the encounter after picking up their second yellow cards in the Cheetahs’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda last week.

Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Rohr acknowledged the setback but remained upbeat about his side’s prospects.

“We’ve lost two players due to yellow cards,” Rohr said. “But anything is still possible for the three teams — South Africa, Benin, and Nigeria. The final outcome is in our hands. There will be big suspense until the end.”

On the Nigerian side, the Super Eagles will be without Ademola Lookman, one of their most creative attackers, after the Atalanta forward received his second yellow card of the qualifiers during the 64th minute of Friday’s 2-1 win over Lesotho. In line with CAF regulations, Lookman will serve a one-match suspension.

Head coach Eric Chelle downplayed the impact of the winger’s absence, expressing full confidence in his squad’s depth and resilience.

“The team is focused and confident,” Chelle said. “Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have the quality to deliver. Every player must be mentally ready to step up when called upon.”

He added that Lookman would continue to play a motivational role within the camp, inspiring his teammates from the sidelines as Nigeria fight to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.

Following their turbulent flight from South Africa, the Super Eagles arrived in Uyo fully aware of the stakes — anything short of a win could deal a severe blow to their quest for a 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket.

Nigeria currently sit third in Group C, behind Benin and South Africa, making Tuesday’s encounter a must-win clash.
