Gambari made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, noting that his three years in Buhari’s administration gave him a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s political environment.

He explained that while the presidency holds immense potential, he observed that those who have benefited most from the country’s resources are often the least dedicated to its progress, unity, and development.

According to him, many seek political power but are unwilling to uphold fairness, justice, and national interest above ethnic or religious sentiments. He added that although opportunities for positive change exist, experience also reveals the challenges and limits of achieving rapid transformation.

Gambari was appointed Chief of Staff in 2020 after the death of Abba Kyari, who previously held the position. He had also served as a minister during Buhari’s military government in the 1980s.

Reflecting on why Buhari chose him again under a civilian administration, Gambari said the former president’s decision was rooted in loyalty to those he believed had contributed to his personal and professional development. He recalled Buhari personally requesting his appointment, saying no one suggested his name, but Buhari insisted on bringing him in.
