Tinubu’s Minister Reveals Extra ₦5 Billion Required For Nationwide Toilet ConstructionThe Minister of Water Resources, Professor Joseph Utsev, has raised concerns about the financial challenges hindering Nigeria’s goal of achieving an Open Defecation Free (ODF) status by 2030. He highlighted that Nigeria needs an additional 11.6 million toilets to meet the ODF target. However, he stressed that achieving ODF status goes beyond merely building toilets—it also requires ensuring access to and the proper use of these facilities.

“The challenge isn’t just the number of toilets; it’s also about changing behavior and encouraging people to consistently use them,” Utsev explained. To address this, he noted that the campaign is being elevated, with the Vice President set to lead the relaunch of the strategy in a more impactful way.

The Minister acknowledged the crucial role of development partners, such as UNICEF, who have contributed significantly to the campaign by supplying toilet facilities, conducting training programs, and raising awareness. While these partners don’t provide direct funding, their support has been key in advancing the initiative.

Since the campaign’s launch in 2019, over 135 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and more than 30,000 communities have achieved ODF status, with additional areas undergoing verification. Despite these achievements, Utsev emphasized that much work remains, especially in underserved and vulnerable communities.

“Ending open defecation is about more than just toilets—it’s about improving public health, boosting productivity, and ensuring the dignity and safety of our citizens,” he said.

The briefing coincided with the observance of the 2024 World Toilet Day, which carries the theme ‘Sanitation for Peace,’ underscoring the importance of toilets as symbols of safety, dignity, and development.
