Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has debunked a viral social media post falsely attributed to her, which allegedly criticised Nigerian leaders over their response to the country’s worsening insecurity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Her clarification comes amid renewed global attention on Nigeria, following comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who accused the Nigerian government of allowing widespread killings of Christians.

The fake post, titled “Trump didn’t ‘hit’ us – our leaders did,” had claimed that Okonjo-Iweala lambasted Nigerian leaders for offering “damage control speeches” instead of taking decisive action against banditry and insurgency.

Taking to her verified account on Saturday, the WTO chief dismissed the statement as false and malicious, stressing that she never made such comments.

Okonjo-Iweala warned the public against sharing fake news and revealed that legal steps were being initiated against those behind the impersonation.

She condemned the act as cowardly, calling on the perpetrators to take responsibility for their own words instead of hiding under her name.

“Beware — this story circulating on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook is false! We are taking action! The person who did this couldn’t even spell my name. Whoever wrote this should own it and not hide behind mine. Scammers and 419ers, stop!” she wrote.
