Nnaji resigned on Monday following a Premium Times investigation which alleged that he never completed his studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and that both the bachelor’s degree and NYSC certificate he submitted to the Presidency, Senate, and security agencies were forged.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Enugu-born politician said his decision came after “deep reflection and consultations” with family, associates, and concerned Nigerians.

“These unfounded allegations and media misrepresentations have caused me personal distress and are beginning to distract from the critical work of the ministry and the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President,” he stated.

Explaining that his decision was driven by principle, Nnaji stressed that stepping down was not an admission of wrongdoing but a gesture to uphold due process.

“My resignation is a personal choice, not an acceptance of guilt. It is a principled step to respect the sanctity of due process and protect the integrity of the judicial proceedings currently before the court,” he declared.

Highlighting his long-standing reputation, he noted: “I have spent over five decades building a life of hard work, honour, and service to humanity. In the end, justice will prevail, and history will vindicate the just.”

Appointed minister in August 2023, Nnaji expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.

“I remain profoundly grateful to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the trust he placed in me and the privilege of serving in his cabinet. His vision for a renewed, innovative, and technologically driven Nigeria is one I continue to cherish, and I pledge my unwavering support to his administration and its transformative agenda,” he concluded.
