Viral Video Sparks Probe As Anambra CP Summons DPO Over Alleged Misconduct

According to the victim’s wife, police officers stopped her husband and requested his vehicle documents. She stated that although he presented all the required papers, the officers allegedly handcuffed him, accused him of being a thief, and took him away while issuing threats. She further claimed that they demanded ₦500,000, but out of fear and uncertainty about their identity, her husband agreed to transfer ₦200,000. She alleged that he was taken to a Point of Sale (POS) operator to withdraw the money.

In a statement released on Monday, March 16, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, assured the public that no officer involved in the incident would be protected.

The statement explained that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okpoko had received the complaint and immediately began efforts to identify the officers implicated. It added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, directed the DPO to produce the officers for investigation and possible disciplinary action in line with police regulations.

Preliminary findings reportedly show that steps had already been taken to trace the officers involved. The command also confirmed that the money allegedly collected from the victim has been returned, describing the conduct as unprofessional and concerning. Authorities noted that the involvement of the POS operator suggests possible conspiracy in the case.

The police command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights, adding that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken if any officer is found guilty. Further updates, it said, will be communicated to the public as investigations continue
