In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), Frank Irabor, stressed that the incident was neither sanctioned nor endorsed by the Oba of Benin, His Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II.
The council described the monarch as a calm, peace-loving leader who neither condones nor encourages violence under any circumstances.
“The regrettable incident in which Pedro Obaseki was assaulted was not authorised by the Oba of Benin and could never be, as such actions are completely inconsistent with the character of our revered monarch. The Oba of Benin remains a father to all and a promoter of peace,” the statement said.
The BTC also cautioned youths against resorting to self-help, urging them to respect the rule of law and allow security agencies to address grievances.
In addition, the council advised social media users to verify information carefully before sharing, warning against the spread of misinformation.
The statement concluded with New Year goodwill messages from the Oba of Benin, alongside a renewed call for peace, unity, and responsible conduct.
