Why Force Him? Ex-Speaker Explains Gov. Mutfwang’s APC Move

Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Istifanus Mwansat, has refuted claims that Governor Caleb Mutfwang was coerced into joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mutfwang officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC on Tuesday.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Mwansat described the Governor’s defection as a wise and voluntary decision.

“Governor Mutfwang was not arm-twisted to join the APC. His move was the best decision,” Mwansat said. “He doesn’t need an automatic ticket because the people of Plateau State are with him. Any time he contests elections—twice or thrice—he will win.”

He added, “Why would anyone try to coerce Governor Mutfwang? There’s no reason for that. His decision is entirely his own, and strategically, it makes sense. Politics requires flexibility; one cannot remain rigid when the platform that brought you to power is weakened, and recovery is beyond your control.”

Mwansat concluded, “It is even scriptural that a wise person sees danger ahead and takes measures to avoid it. Governor Mutfwang, as a prudent leader, foresaw potential challenges, and his decision to move into the APC is the best option given the circumstances.”
