Wike Sparks Debate With Strong Denial Of Bandit Activity In Abuja

Speaking on Monday during an inspection of ongoing projects in the capital, Wike acknowledged that isolated criminal incidents occur but maintained that reports suggesting widespread banditry are overstated.

He stated that the nation’s capital remains secure, adding that security agencies are actively and effectively addressing criminal activities.

Commending the efforts of security personnel, the minister urged Nigerians to recognise and support their work.

Wike noted that crime exists in every part of the world, including developed countries, stressing that no city is completely free of criminal activity.

He dismissed the notion of recurring banditry in Abuja, explaining that while incidents such as kidnappings have occurred — including a recent case in Bwari — the victims were rescued and security agencies responded promptly.

According to him, the key issue is the seriousness and commitment of security agencies in tackling threats, adding that they deserve continued support.

Wike also argued that more attention should be given to the crimes prevented rather than focusing only on isolated incidents.

He concluded by calling for greater public appreciation of security agencies, expressing confidence that they will continue to improve their operations.
