₦49.7 Trillion 2025 Budget: Senate Pushes For Passage Within Tight January Timeline

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Adeola Olamilekan, has announced January 31, 2025, as the target date for the passage of the ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget.

This announcement comes as the committee prepares to begin budget defense sessions on Tuesday.

During a meeting with key committee chairmen on Monday, Olamilekan outlined the framework for the 2025 Budget Defense Session, which will guide the legislative process leading up to the budget’s approval.

He stated that after the Senate resumes plenary on January 14, 2025, there will be a two-week recess dedicated to continuing the budget defense process uninterrupted.

A retreat is scheduled for Thursday to include ministries, departments, agencies, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, providing additional insights and consultations on the budget proposal.

Committees are expected to submit their findings between January 15 and 18, allowing the Appropriations Committee sufficient time to consolidate and finalize the budget documents for consideration.

Emphasizing the tight timeline, Olamilekan urged lawmakers to prioritize the budget process over personal commitments, stressing the importance of prompt and diligent efforts to meet the January 31 deadline.
