₦50,000 Monthly Relief: OPay Reveals Who Qualifies For Federal Government Payment
OPay has clarified that only customers who receive a special notification on the fintech platform’s mobile application are eligible for the Federal Government’s ₦50,000 monthly relief payment under the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI).
The company made the clarification in a statement shared on Tuesday, amid growing public interest in the government’s financial support programme.
According to Bush Radio Academy, OPay explained that beneficiaries are selected by the Federal Government and will receive a pop-up notification on their app homepage, providing instructions on how to access the payment.
The company stressed that customers who cannot see the special feature on their applications are not eligible for the intervention. It also emphasised that OPay does not determine who qualifies for the programme.
Customers seeking further clarification were directed to contact the NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
OPay also warned Nigerians to remain vigilant against fraudsters who may attempt to exploit the relief programme to steal their personal and financial information.
The company stated that it would never request customers’ personal identification numbers (PINs) or one-time passwords (OTPs) to process the relief payment. It further cautioned beneficiaries against paying agents or clicking on suspicious and unverified links.
The fintech firm advised customers to confirm their eligibility and payment status exclusively through its official mobile application and USSD channel.
The Federal Government had earlier announced the commencement of the NERSI programme, through which vulnerable Nigerians are expected to receive ₦50,000 monthly to help cushion the effects of rising living costs.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the initiative on October 30, explaining that the government had partnered with licensed digital financial service providers to facilitate the disbursement.
According to the minister, selected beneficiaries would receive a consent message before the funds are transferred into their designated accounts or digital wallets.
The participating platforms include ALAT by Wema, MoMo PSB, NairaGram, OPay and Moniepoint.
Doro also clarified that the intervention does not require beneficiaries to submit applications, pay fees or register through agents.
He urged Nigerians to protect their financial information, particularly their PINs and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), and advised anyone uncertain about messages relating to the programme to contact the official helpline for verification.
