General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, at the age of 56. The news was confirmed by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement.

Onanuga revealed that Lagbaja passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after battling an illness. Below are key things to know about the late COAS, Taoreed Lagbaja:

1. Early Life and Background

Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja was born on February 28, 1968, in Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government Area, Osun State.

2. 23rd Chief of Army Staff

Lagbaja served as the 23rd Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria.

3. Educational Journey

He attended the Local Authority Teachers College Demonstration School in Osogbo from 1973 to 1979 before moving on to The Polytechnic, Ibadan, from 1984 to 1986, where he earned his West African School Certificate (Advanced Level).

4. Military Academy and Commissioning

Lagbaja was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) on September 12, 1987, as part of the 39th Regular Course. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992.

5. Academic Qualifications

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geography from the NDA in Kaduna and a Master’s degree from the U.S. Army War College.

6. Military Career and Leadership Roles

Before his appointment as COAS, Lagbaja held the position of Chief of Operations (Army). He had also served as the General Officer Commanding 1 Division in Kaduna and 82 Division in Enugu.

7. Appointment as Chief of Army Staff

President Bola Tinubu appointed Lt. Gen. Lagbaja as the Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023.

8. Family

Lagbaja is survived by his beloved wife, Mariya, and their two children.
