Annabelle Carlson, 15, from Aspen, Colorado, was diving near the Lighthouse Reef close to Half Moon Caye in the Gulf of Honduras with her family and a tour group when the incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, August 6, according to the Aspen Daily News.

After removing her diving gear and entering the water for a swim, Carlson was bitten by the shark. Despite her efforts to defend herself, she sustained severe injuries, a GoFundMe page set up for her family detailed.

The page humorously noted, “Annabelle 1, shark 0.”

Belize Dive Pro tour operators swiftly rescued Carlson and transported her to a Coast Guard base, where she was stabilized, Adm. Elton Bennett of the Belize Coast Guard told ABC. Photos from the scene showed a team carrying Carlson to safety on land.

Bennett confirmed that the shark bit Carlson’s right leg, resulting in its amputation.

After being stabilized at a hospital in Belize City, Carlson was airlifted to a trauma center in the US, the GoFundMe page reported.

This shark attack is the first of its kind in recent memory in Belize, Channel 5 Belize noted. Belize’s Minister of the Blue Economy emphasized that such incidents are rare and reassured the public that swimming remains safe.
