18-Year Admission Age Limit Under Review By Federal Authorities
18-Year Admission Age Limit Under Review By Federal AuthoritiesThe Federal Government is currently examining ways to modify the 18-year age limit for university admissions, as revealed by the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman. During the Ministerial Session at the 68th National Council on Education meeting in Abuja, Prof. Mamman emphasized the need for greater flexibility in the admissions process, particularly for exceptionally gifted students.
He acknowledged that some students possess extraordinary abilities, and the government is committed to creating special provisions to facilitate their entry into tertiary institutions. Prof. Mamman clarified that the 18-year age restriction applies strictly to university admissions and does not impact eligibility for O’level exams like WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB.
“There’s been some confusion regarding the 18-year age limit for university admissions,” Mamman said. “The ministry was only referring to the age requirement for entering tertiary institutions, as outlined in the National Policy on Education and the UBEC Act, not for sitting O’level exams. However, the ministry also recognizes that some children are exceptionally intelligent, and we are working on guidelines to accommodate these cases.”
In addition to addressing the age limit issue, the Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to ensure that students acquire at least two practical skills during their basic education.
The 68th National Council on Education meeting, focusing on innovation, digital technology, and entrepreneurship, provided the Federal Government with a platform to showcase its achievements in education and discuss plans for further development. Among these plans is a potential review of the curriculum to better equip students with the skills needed in the digital age, as the country seeks to align its education system with technological advancements.
