The League of Northern Democrats (LND), under Shekarau’s leadership, is actively working to establish a political party aimed at challenging the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming polls.
The League has also expressed its dissatisfaction with both the APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing them of failing to meet the needs of Nigerians during their time in power.
LND is seeking collaboration with political pressure groups in the South to form a strong political force.
Dr. Umar Ardo, the National Convener of LND, recently stated that the organization offers hope to a nation struggling with numerous issues, including poverty, insecurity, inequality, corruption, and economic stagnation. He attributed these challenges to poor governance and pledged the party’s commitment to democratic principles and institutional reform.
Ardo explained that the decision to form a political party stemmed from a recent New Year message by Salihu Mohammed Lukman, the former national vice chairman (North West) of the APC. The message criticized the failures of Nigeria’s political system, particularly the undemocratic practices and mediocrity within both the APC and PDP.
“This call resonates with many Nigerians, particularly northerners, who are desperate for change from the ineffective governance of both the PDP and APC,” Ardo remarked.
In response, the APC’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, dismissed the potential new party as no threat to the APC’s chances in the 2027 elections. He emphasized that the APC’s policies are already yielding positive results and reassured that Nigerians would re-elect the party based on its achievements.
“It is not a threat to our party. The people will decide. We welcome competition, and we are confident that our policies will produce results before 2027. Nigerians will see the impact and will vote for us,” Ibrahim said in a statement on January 6.
