He emphasized that Obi was invited to the gathering as part of his role as the keynote speaker at the 20th anniversary celebration and 16th Founder’s Day event of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), which Atiku founded. Ibe stated, “Obi accepted the invitation to speak at the anniversary, and he was part of that celebration. Politics was not involved. It was a friendly reunion.”

Obi’s media aide, Ibrahim Umar, also refuted claims that the meeting had anything to do with a 2027 election strategy. Umar described the idea of a political alliance being discussed over breakfast as “laughable” and clarified that Obi was simply invited to deliver a speech at the event. “It has nothing to do with politics. People will always read too much into these things,” he said.
