2027 Twist: Peter Obi Reveals Four-Year Agreement With Kwankwaso

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has reaffirmed that he would serve only a single four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor said four years would be sufficient to implement his vision and place Nigeria on the path to sustainable growth.

Obi also confirmed that he and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have a formal agreement committing him to a one-term presidency if they emerge victorious at the polls.

He dismissed suggestions that the pledge was merely a political strategy to attract support, insisting that the commitment was genuine and would be honoured.

“I don’t need more than four years to demonstrate the direction Nigeria should take,” Obi said.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—I will serve for only four years. If Nigerians elect me, it will be one term, nothing more.”

According to Obi, the understanding reached with Kwankwaso is a gentleman’s agreement that both parties intend to respect.

His remarks come days after Kwankwaso publicly reiterated that Obi would not seek a second term if elected president.

The former Kano State governor described Obi as a trustworthy leader, expressing confidence that he would keep his promise to leave office after one tenure.

Kwankwaso also disclosed that the one-term arrangement was documented in writing, explaining that separate agreements were signed between the two politicians and with the party.

“I believe Peter Obi will honour his word,” Kwankwaso said. “From everything I know about him, I don’t see him going back on this commitment. We have documented the agreement—one between both of us and another with the party.”

The development is expected to fuel further discussions about the opposition’s strategy ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as the NDC continues efforts to present a united front against the ruling party.
