2027: Umahi Predicts Tinubu Could Win All Five Southeast States
Minister of Works, David Umahi, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu could secure victory across all five states in the South-East in the 2027 presidential election.
Umahi made the statement while appearing on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he said he believed Tinubu would attract significant support from the region.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the minister urged people in the South-East to move away from regional politics and embrace what he described as broader national engagement.
Umahi said his expectation of a strong performance by Tinubu in the region was based on his personal conviction and his efforts to explain the Federal Government’s policies and activities to residents of the South-East.
“My faith is telling me we will win the five states. I’m working for it. I’m explaining to our people,” he said.
He also called for greater cooperation between the South-East and other parts of the country, arguing that regional politics could limit the region’s ability to engage effectively at the national level.
The minister further defended the Tinubu administration’s treatment of the South-East, arguing that the region had received greater representation under the current government compared with the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Umahi said the South-East was previously disadvantaged in terms of strategic government appointments, noting that the region now has representatives in key positions.
He cited his appointment as Minister of Works, alongside the appointment of other South-East indigenes to senior positions, as evidence of what he described as increased integration into the Federal Government.
“The president has fully integrated the South-East,” Umahi said, adding that the region was not seeking preferential treatment but wanted what he described as fair representation.
He also disclosed that efforts to create an additional state in the South-East were ongoing, describing the proposed sixth state as a work in progress.
Umahi thanked members of the National Assembly for their involvement in the process, arguing that equity requires the South-East to have the same number of states as some other geopolitical zones.
His comments come as political parties and presidential candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with the South-East expected to remain an important battleground in the presidential contest.
