The suspect is said to have committed the crime after gaining the trust of the baby’s mother, Onyinyechi Owujie. Adaeze Lawrence, a reputed hair stylist, used her connection as a schoolmate of Owujie’s elder sister to gain access to the victim.

The incident occurred during the ongoing celebration of the baby’s birth, where Lawrence reportedly seized the opportunity to abscond with the infant. Following credible intelligence, law enforcement officials successfully tracked and apprehended Lawrence at her hideout.

ASP Chioma Chinaka, the State Police Public Relations Officer, provided further insight into the case. She explained, “On August 14, 2023, around 4 pm, the Abia State Police Special Weapons and Tactics Team, Aba, received credible information and effectively apprehended one Adaeze Lawrence of Amaogbonna Road, off Osisikakwu Street in Aba. She was found in possession of a baby boy who is one month and two days old.”

Investigations subsequently unveiled the intricate connections between the suspect and the baby’s family. It was revealed that Adaeze Lawrence and the baby’s mother’s elder sister shared a schoolmate relationship. Exploiting this connection, the suspect reportedly manipulated her way into gaining the mother’s trust.

“Under the pretense of visiting her friend,” ASP Chioma continued, “the suspect requested to celebrate the new baby’s birth. On their celebratory outing, she absconded with the baby.”

Upon arrest, Adaeze Lawrence initially denied any involvement in the crime. However, subsequent medical examinations from the police clinic contradicted her claims, eventually leading to her confession. The biological mother of the child positively identified the baby, confirming the abduction that took place on August 6, 2023.

Lawrence will face legal action as soon as the investigation reaches its conclusion. The Abia State Police Command is committed to ensuring justice is served in this distressing case.
